Housing updates – summer 2026

Health and safety

As you may know, in accordance with health and safety requirements, no items may be stored in communal spaces, and hallways must be kept entirely clear at all times.

This guidance is meant to keep you safe so that, in the event of an emergency, access and evacuation routes are safe for everyone. This is also to keep the schemes tidy.

SCHA is responsible for managing these spaces and, to meet our obligations, we regularly conduct inspections. We will remove and dispose of items left in communal areas.

We had an incident with a scooter recently, and we would like to remind everyone that you are responsible for your scooter’s maintenance.

Residents must obtain permission from SCHA to store a mobility scooter on site, and it must comply with the scheme’s fire risk assessment.

Scheme managers and the supported housing officer are on hand to assist with any questions you have over our policies on mobility scooters or health and safety.

Communal baths

Some residents have asked about the use of communal bath facilities within the Extracare scheme.

Communal baths are designed to support residents who may not have suitable bathing facilities within their own flat or who require additional space or equipment.

Use of these facilities needs to be managed carefully to ensure:

  • Health and safety requirements are met
  • Appropriate cleaning arrangements are in place
  • Support is available where needed

We are reviewing how communal baths are currently used and whether any changes are required to access or arrangements.

We will provide an update once this review is complete. In the meantime, if you have questions or specific needs, please contact us.

Your feedback

We would like to thank the residents who provide feedback and comments, as well as those involved in the Residents Scrutiny Panel.

Your feedback helps us review and improve our services. We aim to respond and follow up where appropriate; however, some issues may take longer to review or require further assessment before action is taken.

We encourage residents to continue sharing their views. If you have feedback or suggestions, please contact Head Office directly or via a member of the team.

You can also attend one of the board and senior managers’ surgeries. The next one is on Tuesday 08 September at Brighton and Oakfield Houses on Warwick Road. Join us from 1pm in the lounge.
